Why high performers end up listless, directionless, and blaming the job (it's not the job)

So many people have given up on fulfilment. They clip the ticket, get through the day. They do not have time to define their purpose or seek “fulfilment”.

But fulfilment matters - more than most people realise.

The deciding question is: are you happy, engaged and fulfilled?

The more strongly you agree, the better your life is. The more strongly you disagree, the more likely you are to suffer.

In 2025, fulfilment was the single most important factor in determining overall resilience. Not safety, optimism, or tactical calm.

Yet most people leave it on the table.

What does fulfilment take? Fulfilment involves three steps:

Define your purpose Create a plan to achieve that purpose Execute the plan

With defined purpose and a clear plan, you create the forward movement towards Flow — matching your skills to a meaningful challenge. That match is the source of fulfilment.

Everyone deserves a shot at feeling happy, engaged and fulfilled. Fulfilment is a super skill, it takes effort and time. But it is worth it.

The feedback loop - no factors in a vacuum The most resilient people also demonstrate a strong commitment to sleep quality, bounce (fast recovery), focus, and relaxation. The least resilient demonstrate significantly less confidence in all four of these factors.

But people with a clear, defined sense of purpose are more likely to prioritise foundational health practices.¹ Fulfilling a clear purpose feels great, and it also makes you more likely to do things that keep you well.²

Which comes first?

Either. Define purpose, experience fulfilment, and you naturally invest in physical practices that sustain it. Build solid health practices, and you create the conditions for high performance, flow and purpose to emerge. It is supremely difficult to build these super-skills if you are sleep deprived, frantic, and never quite recovering from adversity.

The feedback loop is continuous and you can choose to enter where it suits you.

Put it together With clear purpose you are engaged.

When you execute what matters to you in flow state, you are happy.

When you move towards your purpose you experience fulfilment.

Happy, engaged, fulfilled. Go on.

Data: Global Resilience Report 2025. Science: Gewirth (1998), Ryan & Deci (2000), Seligman (2011), Kim et al. (2013), Hill and Turiano (2014)

¹ Kim et al. (2013) – Discovered that individuals with a strong sense of purpose are more likely to engage in preventive health behaviours, leading to better physical health outcomes.

² Hill and Turiano (2014) – Found that a higher sense of purpose in life is associated with a reduced risk of mortality, suggesting that purposeful living contributes to longevity; Ryan & Deci (2000) - Explored self-determination theory, linking fulfillment to intrinsic motivation and autonomy, demonstrating that pursuing meaningful goals enhances well-being.
